SCENTRALOCK - VOC - ISOCYANATE and SOLVENT SUPRRESSOR - ODOR ELMINATOR

SCENTRALOCK - VOC - ISOCYANATE and SOLVENT SUPRRESSOR - ODOR ELMINATOR

What’s Really Happening When You Add ScentraLock™

When you add ScentraLock™ to your coating system, you're not just reducing odor — you're upgrading the very chemistry of your finish. Eliminates Odors at the Molecular Level. Boost Adhesion, UV Resistance, Film Integrity, VOC, ISOSCYONATE, and SOLVENT SUPPRESSION.

Here’s what happens behind the scenes:

1. Crosslinking Enhancement

High-performance coatings — including urethanes, epoxies, and acrylics — contain reactive hydroxyl groups (–OH).

During normal curing, these groups react primarily with the hardener (Part B).

ScentraLock™ introduces an advanced crosslinking agent that actively seeks out unreacted hydroxyl groups, forming new covalent bonds and effectively stitching the coating together with extra chemical bridges.

✅ Result:
• Tighter, denser, stronger film.
• Improved water, chemical, and abrasion resistance.
• Greater flexibility and toughness.

2. Isocyanate Trapping

During application, free isocyanates (–NCO groups) can escape into the environment.

ScentraLock™ contains functional groups that chemically bind to stray isocyanate molecules.

Instead of escaping as hazardous vapors, the isocyanates are captured and locked into the coating matrix.

✅ Result:
• Lower airborne isocyanate exposure.
• Safer application environment.
• Reduced health risks without sacrificing cure strength.

3. Solvent Neutralization

Solvent-based coatings naturally release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air during flashing and curing.

ScentraLock™ acts as a chemical scavenger, reacting with residual solvent molecules as they volatilize.

Instead of remaining airborne, many of these solvent molecules are neutralized chemically — either by bonding into the coating matrix or forming low-volatility byproducts.

✅ Result:
• Dramatic odor reduction during spray and cure.
• Improved indoor air quality during application.
• No negative effect on coating performance.

In Summary

  • Strengthens internal bonding through additional crosslinks
  • Captures stray isocyanates to reduce hazardous emissions
  •  Neutralizes and suppresses solvents to dramatically cut odor
  •  Enhances the final performance of your coating — stronger, tougher, longer-lasting

How Much ScentraLock™ to Add to Your Coatings — And Why It May Vary

ScentraLock™ is an incredibly powerful and concentrated additive designed to enhance odor control, bonding, and coating performance. Because every coating system is unique, there’s no single perfect dose that applies universally.

Basic Chemistry Explanation:

Every two-component (2K) urethane or epoxy system has a different:

  • Solid Content (how much of the gallon becomes dry film after curing)
  • VOC Level (how much solvent evaporates during curing)
  • Mixing Ratio (e.g., 4:1:1 vs. 4:1:3)

The more solvent you add — either because of a different mixing ratio or a choice of slower reducers — the lower the solids become and the more open space there is inside the curing film.

ScentraLock™ works by:

  • Reacting with available hydroxyl groups (–OH) inside the resin system
  • Trapping free solvents and stray isocyanates before they evaporate or become hazards
  • Enhancing crosslink density for a tougher, stronger finish

If a coating is heavily thinned with solvent (like 4:1:3), the chemical environment is different than if it’s mixed at 4:1:1. More solvent = more dilution = more open space = more opportunity (and need) for ScentraLock™ to react and neutralize.

The amount of ScentraLock™ needed may vary based on:

  • The solids content of the coating you’re spraying
  • How much solvent you’ve added during mixing
  • The type of solvent (hot/fast, medium, slow/cold)
  • Spray environment (temperature, humidity, flash times)

Recommended Starting Point:

  • 0.25% by weight (¼ of 1%) added to your fully mixed Part A and Part B combined

From there, each refinisher can fine-tune slightly depending on their unique coatings, solvents, and shop conditions.

In Layman's Terms:

When you mix paint, you’re not just putting A and B together — you’re building a chemical network. ScentraLock™ helps strengthen that network and clean up odors, but how much you need depends on how thick or thin your mix is.

  • If you mix thicker (like a 4:1:1 ratio), there’s less “empty space” — you need just a tiny bit.
  • If you thin it out more (like a 4:1:3 mix), you’ve added extra solvent, and the film is more open — so a little more ScentraLock™ may help.

Think of it like seasoning food:

  • Start with a standard amount (0.25% by weight)
  • Then adjust slightly if needed, depending on how “rich” or “watery” your mixture feels

Key Points:

  • Start with 0.25% (¼ of 1%) — it’s extremely strong, you don’t need much
  • Mix by weight, not volume, for best results
  • Adjust slightly only if you notice unusual odor breakthrough or want a little extra boost in adhesion

ScentraLock™ Compatibility with Solvent-Based Coatings

ScentraLock™ is formulated to perform exceptionally across a wide range of solvent-based coatings, enhancing odor control, bonding strength, and overall film performance. Below is a quick reference chart showing recommended usage:

Coating Type ScentraLock™ Compatibility
2K Urethanes ✔️ Highly Compatible
Epoxy Coatings ✔️ Compatible
Alkyd-Based Coatings ✔️ Compatible
Oil-Based Enamels ✔️ Compatible
Nitrocellulose Lacquers ✔️ Compatible
Vinyl Sealers ✔️ Compatible
Chemcat Solvent-Based Lacquers and Primers ✔️ Compatible

Summary

ScentraLock™ is ideal for use in nearly all solvent-based coating systems, including 2K urethanes, epoxies, alkyds, enamels, nitrocellulose lacquers, and vinyl sealers. Its advanced chemistry allows it to enhance crosslink density, suppress solvents and isocyanates, and dramatically improve film integrity and odor control without interfering with the natural cure process.

Recommended Usage: Start with 0.25% by weight, adjusting slightly based on solids content, mix ratio, and spray environment conditions.

Always perform a small-scale compatibility test before full production runs to ensure optimal results for your specific coating system.

ScentraLock™ is forgiving, but it’s best to stay close to the recommended range unless you have a specific reason to adjust.
