Description

SAFE-ETCH GEL
Safer Surface Profiling for Porcelain & Tile

Built to replace traditional H/F-style etches with a safer, gelled alternative that stays put, cleans deeper, and creates a micro-etch that helps bonding systems perform.

Safer Than H/F
Micro-Etch Control
Gel = Vertical Cling
Cleaner Bonding Surface

Why Safe-Etch Beats Old-School H/F Etches

1) Safer chemistry for the same job
Traditional H/F-based etches are notorious for serious burn risk. Safe-Etch uses a different approach to deliver surface profiling with a much safer handling profile.
2) Over-etching creates failure points
Over-etching can leave behind a white, powdery residue. If that powder isn’t fully removed, you’re coating over a weak layer — and that becomes a bond-break / fail point.
3) Most tubs are already etched
Let’s be real: if you’re showing up to refinish, the surface usually has an existing etch. Your job is to clean, decontaminate, and expose that profile — then use Safe-Etch to deepen cleaning and create a controlled micro-etch.
4) Micro-etch helps silane systems work
On glossy or hard surfaces, “no etch” is rarely ideal. A micro-etch gives coupling/bonding systems a place to anchor and deposit — especially wipe-on primers like Power Bond.
Pro takeaway: You’re not trying to “melt the tub.” You’re creating a clean, controlled profile that your system can lock onto.
The 2-Step Prep System (Do It In Order)
Cleaning first makes etching consistent and predictable.
Step 1: Deep Clean
Remove embedded soap scum, body oils, and residues that block etch performance.
Step 2: Safe-Etch Gel
Create the controlled micro-etch profile and final deep cleaning needed for strong bonding and reliable results.
Why this matters: Etch doesn’t work right over oils, scum, waxes, or residue. Clean first — then profile.

How To Use Safe-Etch Gel (Field-Ready)

1) Protect & prep
Mask off adjacent areas and protect finishes. After Step 1 cleaning, ensure the surface is ready for consistent profiling.
2) Apply (brush on, full coverage)
Apply a liberal coat with a natural bristle brush. The gel clings to vertical surfaces and stays where you put it.
3) Dwell time
Typical dwell: 5 minutes (light porcelain) / 15 minutes (darker porcelain). The goal is a controlled micro-etch — not aggressive removal.
4) Rinse + scrub + dry
Rinse thoroughly while scrubbing with a maroon pad. Remove all residue, then wipe dry completely.
Pro rule: If you ever see white powdery residue, treat it like a contaminant — remove it completely. Don’t coat over it.

Why Micro-Etch Helps Wipe-On Primers

Wipe-on coupling/bonding systems perform best when the surface has a clean, consistent “tooth.” Safe-Etch builds that controlled micro-profile so wipe-on primers can lay down evenly and leave behind a uniform film.
Clean. Profile. Prime. Coat. That’s how you get repeatable results.

Safety (Be a Pro)

  • Wear PPE: gloves, goggles/face protection, and protective clothing.
  • Ventilation: use in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling fumes.
  • Contact protocol: avoid skin/eye contact; rinse immediately with plenty of water if contact occurs.
  • Storage: keep sealed, cool, dry, away from heat and sunlight.

Safe-Etch Gel — Controlled Profiling Without the Old-School Risk

Use it as part of the Shark Grip Coatings Bonding System for cleaner surfaces, better primer performance, and fewer failures.

    This Stuff Works

I use this product any time etching is required. It creates tooth just as good as traditional hydrochloric acid etch but is much safer. Working with chemicals, it's always important to utilize a safer product when possible. Get some. You won't be disappointed.

    The best etch

This cleaner gives the perfect amount of etch without worries that you will over etch, like with those containing HF.
