Start With the Surface — Not the Coating
The coating is only one part of the system. Professional results begin by identifying the surface, choosing the correct preparation method, wiping with the proper bonding agent, selecting the right system path, and matching the final coating to the performance needs of the job.
1. What Surface Are You Refinishing?
START HERE: IDENTIFY THE SURFACE
PORCELAIN / CERAMIC TILE PATH
ScumBuster Pre-Clean
Safe-Etch Gel
SWAT Final Wipe
Power Bond Wipe-On Primer
Use this path when the surface is chemically profiled by etching.
FIBERGLASS / CULTURED MARBLE / COMPOSITE PATH
ScumBuster Pre-Clean
Sand / Abrade
SWAT Final Wipe
Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter
Use this path when the surface is mechanically profiled by sanding.
NEXT: Choose the correct system path - then match the coating to the job.
PROFESSIONAL RULE
Power Bond Wipe-On Primer
IF IT ETCHES → USE POWER BOND
Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter
IF IT SANDS → USE BULL SHARK
2. Clean, Dry and Dull Is the Final Goal
The Goal Never Changes
Every professional refinishing job must end with a surface that is clean, dry and dull. That final profile is the foundation for adhesion, film build, and long-term performance.
The Method Changes by Surface
Porcelain and ceramic tile are chemically profiled with Safe-Etch Gel. Fiberglass, cultured marble, ABS, Formica and composites are mechanically abraded.
3. Core Preparation Products in Order of Progress
COMMON START: Clean first. Then choose the correct profiling method. Then solvent wipe. Then bond.
STEP 1 — CLEAN EVERY SURFACE
ScumBuster
ScumBuster Pre-Clean
Remove soap scum, oils, residues, and contamination before profiling.
STOP — CHOOSE YOUR SURFACE PROFILING METHOD
Remember the rule: Clean Dry and Dull, this will never change.
Do not continue until you identify the surface. Porcelain and ceramic tile follow the etch path. Fiberglass, cultured marble, ABS, Formica, and composites follow the sand path.
A. ETCH PATH
Safe-Etch Gel
Safe-Etch Gel
Use for porcelain and ceramic tile. This path leads to Power Bond Wipe-On Primer.
B. SAND PATH
Mirka PROS 5 Inch Vacuum Ready Finish Sander
Sand / Abrade
Use for fiberglass, cultured marble, ABS, Formica, and composites. This path leads to Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter.
STEP 3 — FINAL WIPE
SWAT Solvent Wipe
SWAT Final Wipe
Use after profiling the surface and before Power Bond Bonding Agent or Bullshark Adhesion promoter.
STEP 4 — APPLY THE CORRECT BONDING AGENT
Your profiling method determines the bonding product.
IF YOU ETCHED
Power Bond Wipe-On Primer
Power Bond Wipe-On Primer
For etched porcelain and ceramic tile.
IF YOU SANDED
Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter
Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter
For sanded fiberglass, cultured marble, ABS, Formica, and composites.
4. Primer & Topcoat System vs. Direct-to-Surface System
After the surface has been cleaned with ScumBuster, properly profiled using Safe-Etch Gel or sanding, solvent wiped with SWAT, and treated with either Power Bond Wipe-On Primer or Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter, the next decision is how the refinisher wants to achieve film build and long-term performance.

There are two proven paths. One uses a dedicated primer beneath the finish coat. The other uses a direct-to-surface finish system with additional coats to achieve the desired build.
Primer & Topcoat System
SharkGrip High Solids High Build Epoxy Primer
Power Bond or Bull Shark

SharkGrip High Solids High Build Epoxy Primer

Selected SharkGrip Finish System
This path uses primer to create additional film build beneath the finish coat. The primer helps improve hiding, build, impact distribution, and overall system strength.
Direct-to-Surface System
Power Bond or Bull Shark

Liquid Porcelain Enamel or SharkGrip High Gloss Epoxy

Additional Build Coats As Needed
This path uses direct-to-surface systems designed with adhesion built in. When more build is desired, apply additional coats of the finish system itself.
Important LPE Rule: Do not use SharkGrip High Solids High Build Epoxy Primer beneath Liquid Porcelain Enamel unless specifically instructed by SharkGrip Technical Support.
Additional film build:  Impact and chip resistance greatly improves with a few additional coats when spraying Liquid  Liquid Porcelain Enamel or SharkGrip High Gloss Epoxy Topcoat.  Primer or additional mils help distribute imacts more evenly across the surface.
5. Film Build and Useful Service Life
There Are Two Ways to Get Build
With a primer and topcoat system, build is created with SharkGrip High Solids High Build Epoxy Primer beneath the finish. With Liquid Porcelain Enamel or SharkGrip High Gloss Epoxy, build is created by applying additional coats of the finish system itself.
Why More Build Is Important
More film build can improve hiding, help distribute impact energy, and create a more durable coating stack. The goal is not extra material for its own sake. The goal is enough film build for the service conditions of the job.
6. Why SharkGrip Offers Multiple Finish Systems
Most suppliers try to solve every refinishing situation with one coating. SharkGrip takes a different approach.

Different surfaces, service environments, production requirements, turnaround expectations, and customer needs often require different solutions. That is why SharkGrip offers multiple professional finish systems, each designed to excel in specific applications.

The goal is not to determine which coating is “best.” The goal is to determine which coating is best suited to the professional refinisher, the customer, and the service environment.
Professional Insight: SharkGrip High Gloss Epoxy, SharkThane Quick Dry, Liquid Porcelain Enamel, and SharkThane Plus are not competing against each other. They are different tools for different jobs.
7. Determine the Performance Need
All SharkGrip coating systems, when applied as directed over properly prepared surfaces, are designed for professional refinishing work. The difference is not good versus bad. The difference is choosing the right tool for the job.

9. Direct-to-Surface Systems Without Confusion
Liquid Porcelain Enamel Direct-to-Surface Lane
Liquid Porcelain Enamel is designed to go direct to properly prepared surfaces. Do not use epoxy primer under LPE unless SharkGrip technical support specifically instructs otherwise. For more build, spray extra coats of LPE.
SharkGrip Epoxy Direct-to-Surface Lane
SharkGrip High Gloss Epoxy uses the same resin family as the primer in a high-gloss finish system. Going direct-to-surface with additional build coats is a sound production approach when the surface is properly prepared and bonded.
10. Surface Decision Matrix
Surface Prep Method Bonding Choice System Direction
Porcelain Tub ScumBuster + Safe-Etch Gel + SWAT Power Bond Wipe-On Primer Primer/topcoat system or compatible direct-to-surface system
Ceramic Tile ScumBuster + Safe-Etch Gel + SWAT Power Bond Wipe-On Primer Choose system by exposure, traffic, and customer expectations
Fiberglass / Cultured Marble / Composite ScumBuster + Sand/Abrade + SWAT Bull Shark Adhesion Promoter Choose system by flexibility, use, exposure, and service conditions
Commercial Production Surface-specific prep Power Bond or Bull Shark based on prep method SharkGrip High Gloss Epoxy or SharkThane Quick Dry based on production needs
Pro Tip: If it etches, use Power Bond. If it sands, use Bull Shark.
