SCUM-BUSTER™ STEP 1
Professional Tub & Tile Cleaner
Step 1: Clean Before You Etch

If you put etching gel over heavy scum, you’re etching the scum — not the porcelain. Scum-Buster is the “fail-safe” first step that exposes the real surface so Step 2 (Safe-Etch Gel) can do its job.

Step 1 of 2
Defeats Scum “Armor”
Clean • Dry • Dull Foundation
Pro Use Only

Why Step 1 Exists (And Why Most Systems Fail Without It)

Heavy soap scum is not just “soap.” It’s a stacked contamination layer that becomes a semi-plastic barrier that acids struggle to penetrate. That’s why you can’t “etch your way through” a dirty tub.

What “Heavy Scum” Really Is

  • Body oils and fatty residues
  • Soap surfactants + detergents
  • Hard-water minerals (calcium / lime)
  • Silicones and waxes (from cleaners & polishes)
  • Rust and staining metals
Reality: Those layers combine into a petroleum-leaning “pseudo scum” that behaves like a protective film — an armor plate against acids.

The Fail-Safe System: Step 1 + Step 2

Ever notice why strong acids are stored in plastic containers? Because many acid systems don’t “eat through” polymer-type barriers easily. Heavy soap scum behaves the same way — it blocks etching chemistry from reaching the substrate.

Step 1 (Scum-Buster): removes the armor layer.
Step 2 (Safe-Etch Gel): creates a controlled micro-etch for maximum wetting and bonding.
The Step You Can’t Skip
If etch touches scum first, your bonding system is compromised before you even spray.
Wrong Order
  • Etch goes over scum & oils
  • Acid reaction happens on contamination
  • Uneven dulling / patchy profile
  • Adhesion weak points = callbacks
  •
Result: You etch the grime, then paint the grime.
Correct Order
  • Scum-Buster strips the armor layer
  • Surface becomes truly exposed
  • Safe-Etch creates controlled micro-etch
  • Primer / coupling agents wet & lock in
Result: Clean, uniform prep that bonds like it should.

Professional Use (Step 1)

  1. Apply Scum-Buster™ by brush or spray.
  2. Dwell 3–5 minutes (don’t let it dry out).
  3. Scrub using warm water + 3M Scotch-Brite Maroon Pad (07447).
  4. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
  5. Proceed to Step 2: Safe-Etch Gel for micro-etch and final bonding profile.
Pro Insight: You’re not “cleaning” — you’re removing a contamination film that blocks acids and destroys adhesion.

Safety + Professional Standard

  • Use OSHA-approved chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, and protective clothing.
  • Wear an acid gas respirator and ensure strong ventilation.
  • Rinse and neutralize per your shop protocol. Keep product off finished or sensitive surfaces.
*Professional refinishing use only. Step 1 is mandatory for best results with Safe-Etch Gel, wipe-on primers, and high-performance topcoats. *

Clean First. Then Micro-Etch. Then Spray Like a Pro.

Scum-Buster makes Step 2 work — and Step 2 makes your bonding system bulletproof.

Literally a game changer in the cleaning process, you watch stuff dissolve when you put it on

    Excellent degreaser

At full strength this will dissolve the worst soap scum and build up. When diluted, it's my go-to for cleaning during the prep process for all fixtures and materials.
