Description

TRUE GRIT / SHARKGRIP COATINGS
Slip Resistant Surface (SRS) System

Professional-grade polycarbonate crystals designed to create a Slip Resistant Surface (SRS) in bathtub bottoms and wet areas — without compromising appearance or coating integrity.

Integral SRS System

Why Slip Resistant — Not “Anti-Slip”

The term “anti-slip” implies slipping is impossible — which is neither accurate nor responsible. A Slip Resistant Surface (SRS) increases friction and traction to help reduce slip risk, but users must still use caution, especially in wet environments.

Integral Slip Resistant Surface

This method creates an integral SRS, meaning the crystals are suspended inside the coating system — not broadcast on top. Final traction comes from the crystal tips that remain exposed after full film build.

Why Polycarbonate Matters

Polycarbonate crystals are harder, more chemically resistant, and far less prone to staining than polypropylene or PVC-based grit — critical in tub bottoms where body oils, soap residue, and hard water concentrate.

The Visual Difference: Polycarbonate vs “Typical” Crystals
Why TRUE GRIT stays cleaner and protects the coating system long-term.
TRUE GRIT (Polycarbonate)

  • Resists staining from oils, soap residue, and minerals
  • Hard + crush-resistant under foot traffic
  • Maintains structure so coating doesn’t flex around voids
  • Cleaner look in clear and pigmented systems
Result: Stronger SRS that stays cleaner and helps prevent micro-cracking.
Typical Polypropylene / PVC-Based Crystals

  • Stains & discolors in tub bottoms over time
  • Softens / crushes under traffic and hot water exposure
  • Creates voids & flex points inside the film
  • Micro-cracking risk → water intrusion and premature failure
Result: Cosmetic staining + structural weaknesses that can lead to cracking and water migration.
Common Failure Chain with Inferior Crystals (What Pros See in the Field)
1) Stains
Oils + minerals lock into softer polymer.
2) Softens / Crushes
Traffic compresses the particle.
3) Voids / Flex
Film flexes around empty pockets.
4) Micro-Cracks
Cracks form and water migrates.
Note: Field performance is influenced by coating system, film build, cleaner exposure, and use conditions. TRUE GRIT is selected to reduce these common issues by using a harder, more stable polycarbonate particle.

Professional Application Method (Integral SRS)

  1. Prepare the tub bottom. Clean thoroughly. Surface must be clean, dry, and dull.
  2. Mask the area. Use blue tape to square or template the desired SRS zone.
  3. Pre-mix your coating. Use your fully mixed topcoat system.
  4. Add crystals. For a small tub start with 1/2 tablespoon (or up to 3 oz) per mixed batch as your baseline guide.
  5. Ribbon-pour evenly into the masked area.
  6. Foam-roll evenly to distribute coating and crystals uniformly.
Pro Insight: What you see wet will look aggressive at first. This is normal.

Understanding Film Build & Final Texture

As primer and topcoats are applied, mil thickness builds around the crystals. The coating encapsulates most of the particle, leaving only the top edges exposed. These exposed tips create traction while maintaining a clean, professional appearance.

Experience Matters

The suggested mix ratio is a starting point. Skilled refinishers learn to visually gauge coverage, texture height, and final feel. Your experience on-site is the final authority.

Build Safer Surfaces — Without Sacrificing Quality

TRUE GRIT polycarbonate crystals help professional refinishers create durable, cleaner-looking Slip Resistant Surfaces that hold up where it matters most.
